Ingredients
For the Gyros:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon ground thyme
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 4 pita breads
Optional Toppings:
- Lettuce
- Sliced tomato
- Sliced cucumber
- Sliced red onion
- Fresh dill
- Feta cheese
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
- ¾ cup Greek yogurt
- ¾ cup grated cucumber (preferably English cucumber)
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
- ½ tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup feta cheese, crumbled
Preparation
- Cook the Beef: In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes. Add the oregano, thyme, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, and ½ cup of water. Let the mixture simmer over medium heat until the sauce thickens and coats the beef, about 5 minutes.
- Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce:While the beef is cooking, prepare the tzatziki sauce. Start by squeezing out any excess liquid from the grated cucumber and discarding the liquid. In a small bowl, combine the cucumber with the Greek yogurt, fresh dill, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and crumbled feta cheese. Stir well to blend the ingredients.
- Assemble the Gyros: To assemble the gyros, lay a pita flat and add your preferred toppings such as lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and red onion. Spoon the seasoned ground beef over the vegetables and finish with a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce. Garnish with fresh dill and crumbled feta cheese for extra flavor.
Enjoy your flavorful homemade gyros!
