Ingredients

For the Gyros:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 pita breads

Optional Toppings:

  • Lettuce
  • Sliced tomato
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Sliced red onion
  • Fresh dill
  • Feta cheese

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • ¾ cup Greek yogurt
  • ¾ cup grated cucumber (preferably English cucumber)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
  • ½ tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup feta cheese, crumbled

Preparation

  1. Cook the Beef: In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes. Add the oregano, thyme, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, and ½ cup of water. Let the mixture simmer over medium heat until the sauce thickens and coats the beef, about 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce:While the beef is cooking, prepare the tzatziki sauce. Start by squeezing out any excess liquid from the grated cucumber and discarding the liquid. In a small bowl, combine the cucumber with the Greek yogurt, fresh dill, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and crumbled feta cheese. Stir well to blend the ingredients.
  3. Assemble the Gyros: To assemble the gyros, lay a pita flat and add your preferred toppings such as lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and red onion. Spoon the seasoned ground beef over the vegetables and finish with a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce. Garnish with fresh dill and crumbled feta cheese for extra flavor.

Enjoy your flavorful homemade gyros!
